Senior Dog Diet: DIY Green Doggie Smoothie

You are what you eat!

You really are what you eat! It’s so true. So are your senior dogs. If you feed them fillers (like many dog food brands have, including top grain-free brands), you’ll attribute to many health complications, especially as they grow older.

When my chocolate lab, Coco, and my Aussie mix, Skylar was 9 and 10 years old respectively, they started to show severe signs of arthritis and heavy panting. I read and heard more than not that because they were larger dogs, these were normal and expected signs they were just “old”.

These “old age” symptoms seemed to come overnight (as many ailments in animals do). All at once Coco and Skylar couldn’t get up on their own. Both of them could not stand without pain in their joints and I was having a hard time lifting them up. Imagine this with two dogs!

I remember slipping on the floor and laying beside each of them and just crying. Everything was just falling apart all at once it seemed.

At the time, I was purchasing top-of-the-line organic/grain-free food. So, I couldn’t understand what was happening. I even changed their food at the time to dehydrated organic food to see if this would make a difference. It did not for Coco and Skylar. In fact, the dehydrated dog food was even worse because it wasn’t as hydrated. It seems like a no-brainer now, but I didn’t know then.

I researched a bit and found what I believe extended their lives 6 and 7 years more for Coco and Skylar. Although the dog food I was buying was better than almost everything on the market, it wasn’t “feeding” their cells as real food should do.

After trying these other varieties of food, I couldn’t detect any significant signs of improvement and their arthritis and night-panting were about the same.

I had just returned from a “raw” food retreat in Martha’s Vineyard and found it fascinating! Most of the people attending had some kind of illness that had no known cure (lime disease, etc.), but I was very healthy and attended because I wanted to learn about raw food diets. I’m glad I took the time to travel across the country and abated my fears.

I learned that “live” or “raw” food has properties that heat or cooking depletes. We all would benefit from eating more raw food than not. Our cells are much more responsive to living food. One rule of thumb is if anything comes in a box, it’s probably not real food.

Because dogs are animals like us, I used this same concept and created a “DIY Green doggie smoothie” made of mostly green veggies and blended with filtered water to the consistency of a thick-like chili.

I poured about a cup of this smoothie over each of their portions of food (sometimes kibble, boiled turkey, or raw/cooked ground beef) every time they ate which was about twice a day. As they got older, I would feed them the same amounts 3 times daily. So overall, they would “each” get at least 2 cups total of my “DIY Green Doggie Smoothie” per day.

I would blend about 4 blenders full of “DIY green doggie smoothie” and freeze the remaining containers. This amount would last us about a week. It was an easy and quick process. And, this ended up being less expensive overall.

Obvious results ensued! Overnight, they quit panting and their energy came back. Within about a week, they showed no signs of arthritis and they were able to get up without a hitch (and continued to get up without struggle). They lived 6 and 7 years more and without fusion of any kind in their joints. Plus, they were cancer-free. They were healthy and happy senior dogs.

Example of “thickness” of DIY Dog Smoothie
Sometimes, I make my own dog food (as this video shows) and then add my DIY Green Dog Smoothie over the food.

The DIY Green Doggie Smoothie over their food was also less expensive than me purchasing 40lbs. of dry dog food or a case of canned organic wet food or 10lbs. of organic dehydrated food. And, their bodies and cells were satisfied all day and all night.

I cannot express how much my large senior dogs improved with this slight diet change. They did not require medication and I had no out-of-the-ordinary vet visits.

In the video above, I also added Organic Maca Powder, Organic Coconut Oil, Spirulina, and Chia Seeds. You can choose these natural healing boosters in each smoothie. As you see results, you will adjust accordingly to your pet’s needs.

And, be sure to make one for yourself!!!
