Senior Dog Hikes

How to prepare for your senior dog during an outdoor hike.

The cover photo is of my two dogs in the Ozark mountains where I originally grew up.

The video below was taken at Charmlee Park in Malibu. The park is perched on a bluff overlooking the great Pacific Ocean along the California Coast. Charmlee has since been in a few wildfires.

On days that we weren’t at the beach, we would go hiking a mile from the ocean, in the Santa Monica Mountains at Charmlee Park.

A good time to go hiking in the California climate is early in the morning or early evening to avoid higher heat temperatures and rattlesnakes. Snakes like to bask in the hot sun directly on the dirt trails. My favorite month in California is September!

Skylar (Coco is behind me) has hiked over a mile to this point. She was always a good hiker yet slow! This is expected of senior dogs. A slow hike is better than a no hike! And, her long dog yawn at the end of this video is priceless!!!

When we would get home after a 3 to 4-mile jaunt, they would eat. For their joints, I always included in their food, mainly in my DIY Green Doggie Smoothie that I poured over their food:

Organic Chia seeds
Organic Coconut oil
Organic Turmeric Powder

I would then give both Coco and Skylar a couple of drops of CBD/Hemp Oil for Dogs and Cats in their food twice a day. The amount that you use will depend on the weight of your pet. Refer to the instructions from the company.

The oil has many benefits for dogs. It has anti-inflammatory properties that can relieve dogs of chronic pain and is also used as a preventative measure for arthritis. CBD/Hemp Oil for Dogs and Cats also has a soothing effect on them to relax and have a good night’s sleep. There are varying potencies for your pet’s weight and size. Read the information on the bottles and be consistent.

You can do this preventative ritual for younger adult dogs and cats as well.

It is important to keep your pets as active as you can throughout their lives. Mine always made sure I got my exercise too!!!

P.S. Links within my posts are affiliated. I do get a commission on the products I’ve suggested above. What is fantastic is that you will get these products at no extra cost. I’ve personally used these products for Coco and Skylar and further had the pleasure of enjoying two healthy, senior dogs for almost 20 years.
