Senior Dogs and Pools
If you have a pool and a senior dog, then this is an extremely important tip to consider purchasing a pool fence. The WaterWarden WWF300 Inground Pool Fence is a wonderful choice and well-priced.
WaterWarden also has Easy DIY Installation here and there are other designs that you can look at to see what your specific needs are. For example, there is a pool fence by VINGLI that looks great around smaller pools.
An enclosure or pool fence is a must if you are unable to supervise a dog that spends most of its time in the backyard. If you are not a fan of a “pool fence”, then consider using an “invisible” fence. Invisible, or underground fencing is also a viable choice. The main point here is that there is a sturdy barrier between your pool and your pet.
Senior dogs can suffer more from arthritis, vision loss, seizures, and a host of other health issues that may require your special attention around the pool (even if you’ve had your pet around your pool for years).
Below are important details to consider:
- Fence Height (most senior dogs cannot jump higher than 5 feet)
- Durable Materials
- Ground Clearance (no large gaps from the ground to the bottom of the fencing)
- Gap Width
- Fence Connections
There are hundreds of death reports each year of older dogs (and certain breeds that don’t naturally swim well) from drowning in the family pool. You must not take for granted that your pets are familiar with your pool at all. They can accidentally fall in without anyone around and this will be a tragic ending if not prepared. Be prepared.
